 Functional Dry Needling

Functional dry needling is a technique used by physical therapists to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction by inserting thin needles into specific trigger points in muscles. These trigger points are tight bands of muscle fibers that can cause pain, stiffness, and limited range of motion. The needles stimulate the muscle tissue, promoting blood flow, reducing muscle tension, and encouraging the release of endorphins to reduce pain. The goal is to alleviate pain, improve mobility, and restore normal muscle function by targeting areas of dysfunction or muscle tightness. Unlike acupuncture, functional dry needling focuses specifically on musculoskeletal issues rather than balancing the body's energy.

What does dry needling help treat?

  1. Muscle strains and sprains – to alleviate pain and improve recovery.
  2. Myofascial pain syndrome – to target trigger points causing localized or referred pain.
  3. Tendinitis and tendinopathy – such as in the shoulder (rotator cuff), elbow (tennis elbow), or Achilles tendon.
  4. Chronic pain conditions – including fibromyalgia and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS).
  5. Joint dysfunctions – like those caused by conditions such as frozen shoulder or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
  6. Post-surgical rehabilitation – to improve muscle recovery and mobility after surgery.
  7. Headaches and migraines – especially those related to tension or cervical spine dysfunction.
  8. Neck and back pain – including conditions like herniated discs, sciatica, and muscle stiffness.
  9. Carpal tunnel syndrome – to reduce nerve compression and improve function.
  10. Plantar fasciitis – targeting the heel and foot muscles to reduce pain and stiffness.

Dry needling helps by reducing muscle tightness, improving blood flow, and promoting healing in the affected areas.
